Sigfox launches new German IoT network from Munich

A coffee machine that is connected to the Internet and can automatically reorder coffee beans - wouldn't that be fantastic? Or industrial plants which can independently monitor heating installations or solar parks or have maintenance performed? What might seem incredible to some is already being developed by others; namely by Sigfox: in Germany, from Munich.

Sigfox is a French wireless network provider specialised in machine-to-machine communication and the Internet of Things. Sigfox's technology makes it possible to connect low-cost and low-energy devices to the Internet and can be applied in a variety of B2C or B2B application fields. The highlight: Sigfox focuses on the transfer of small amounts of data and simple information which do not require an electricity and cost-intensive broadband connection. In February 2015, the start-up founded near Toulouse received EUR 100 million additional capital from industry and telecommunication companies for its worldwide expansion. Since then, Germany, as a high-tech industrial country (keyword: Industry 4.0) and large consumer electronics market, has also been at the top of the list for network expansion. The first base station has been established in Munich. From here, Aurelius Wosylus, Director Sales & Partners at Sigfox Germany, has been driving the expansion of the network throughout Germany with his constantly growing team. The Germany-wide Sigfox network for Connected Objects is to be in place by the end of 2017.

The metropolitan region of Munich as a location offers many advantages

The location was selected carefully: To Sigfox, the metropolitan region of Munich is not only an important centre of the semiconductor and embedded systems market, but also a strategic location for expansion in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) due to its geographical location and accessibility. The internationally known appeal of the location and high quality of living also have a positive effect – on the one hand, it makes staff recruitment easier; on the other hand, the location offers numerous charming opportunities to establish and expand customer relations. The Oktoberfest, for example, is an invaluable opportunity with invaluable potential for cultivating international relations. Thus, the Bavarian metropolis scores not only with hard facts, but soft facts as well.

Based on the large market potential (the number of Connected Things is estimated to increase to 20.8 billion worldwide by 2020 according to a study by Gartner), Sigfox expects a steady growth for the coming years. Therefore, they are planning to significantly expand activities in Munich in order to meet market demands. Being discussion for the future is the option of opening a further branch in northern Germany, which will be run from Munich.
