The Chinese electric vehicle start-up Li Auto celebrated the opening of its offices in Munich at the beginning of 2025. Invest in Bavaria and the Bavarian foreign representations in China supported the company’s establishment in Bavaria. Video interview with Dr Qiang Liu, General Manager of Li Auto Germany.

The success story of the start-up Li Auto, founded by Li Xiang in 2015, is remarkable: from zero to a valuation of 10 billion US dollars within five years, recognised as one of the fastest-growing companies in China. And the vehicles? According to the company, they are more comfortable, more convenient – and now certainly “more Bavarian”.

F&E made in Bavaria

The approximately 30 employees of Li Auto’s European location will initially focus on research into semiconductor technology, efficient electric drivetrains and design. In the future, a further expansion of activities is planned, particularly in the field of semiconductor technology.

Delegation Trip by Bayern International

Invest in Bavaria supported Li Auto in selecting a location and provided extensive assistance. The first discussions took place as early as 2021, with the Bavarian representations in Chengdu, Qingdao and Shenzhen playing a key role in facilitating them. The visit of State Minister Aiwanger to the company’s headquarters in Beijing in October 2024, as part of a delegation trip organised by Bayern International, further strengthened relations. In a video interview, we had the opportunity to speak with Dr Qiang Liu, General Manager of Li Auto Germany, to learn more about the establishment process, site selection and future plans at the new location.

Bavarian Foreign Representatives: Strong Partnership Between Bavaria and China

Several of Li Auto’s competitors, including Nio, Avatr, Changan and FAW, have also ventured into Europe and Bavaria, receiving support from Invest in Bavaria. This latest establishment highlights Bavaria’s significance as a high-tech region with strong research capabilities. With a bilateral trade volume of 53 billion euros in 2023, China remains Bavaria’s most important trading partner. Many Chinese companies from a wide range of industries have a presence in the Free State. To support the Chinese business community in Bavaria, this year marks the third edition of the “Hock di her” event, organised by Invest in Bavaria. At this event, Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Hubert Aiwanger, welcomes executives from Chinese companies for direct dialogue.

The Invest in Bavaria team congratulates Li Auto on this milestone and remains available to support the company’s continued expansion at its new location in Bavaria.
