“Hock di her”: Second edition covering the exclusive Bavarian-Chinese business dialogue with Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Hubert Aiwanger
In July of this year, an exclusive Bavarian-Chinese business dialogue took place in Munich for the second time. Hubert Aiwanger – Minister of State for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy – met with 25 CEOs from Chinese companies based in Bavaria, at the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. The CEOs offered key insight into current developments, challenges and their plans for the future of their companies in Bavaria.
The aim being pursued by such an exchange is to facilitate an open discussion on current opportunities and challenges. During the discussions, it became clear that Chinese companies in Bavaria benefit from the strong research landscape, unparalleled proximity to B2B customers and the necessary access to talent. The region’s broad-based ecosystem, with a large number of industry clusters in the Free State also serves as a positive source of stimulus – especially for newly established companies. Conversely, companies remain concerned about EU import duties on electric cars from China, which have been in force since July 2024.
Aiwanger: “China is Bavaria’s most important trading partner – we benefit from each other, and want to work together in a spirit of fairness, and on an equal footing”
The CEOs emphasised the importance of a direct exchange with political leaders, as well as with other Chinese companies. After the discussion in the Ludwig Erhard Hall, there was plenty of time for bilateral talks and networking within the Chinese business community in Bavaria. Everyone agreed on one thing: mutual success is rooted in stable economic relations between Germany and China, along with the expansion of inter-cultural competencies. Invest in Bavaria will continue to be available to companies to support them with their questions or expansion plans.
Aiwanger: “Chinese companies bring tremendous innovation and jobs to Bavaria. China is our most important trading partner. That’s why pursuing a close dialogue with the CEOs and our business development agency, Invest in Bavaria, is essential.”
There are currently approximately 500 Chinese companies operating in Bavaria. China is one of the top countries of origin for foreign direct investment in Bavaria. China is also the No. 1 trading partner for the Bavarian economy: a record volume of EUR 53.1 billion was recorded in 2023.
