Best places: the perfect picnic in Bavaria

Digitalisation is changing the world and making it more and more exciting. But personal moments of relaxation away from your smartphone and computer are extremely important to be able to take a deep breath now and again. Fortunately, Bavaria offers a number of opportunities for the right work-life balance. These include Bavaria’s hugely diverse outdoors that can be used ideally for picnic dates together. So what are you waiting for? Pack your picnic basket and discover our tips for the most beautiful picnic spots in Bavaria. And with a bit of luck you can win your own Invest in Bavaria picnic blanket in our sweepstake.

Wine meets versatility

Franconia is well-known for its good reputation as a wine-growing area but besides its first-class wines there are also unique places for a picnic. For example, Lower Franconia has the perfect place for a romantic picnic with its Rosengarten in Bad Kissingen. If you prefer an outing close to water, it’s worth visiting Erlabrunner Lakes in the Würzburg district. And we highly recommend swimming in the refreshing, cold water to burn a few calories before your picnic. As the lakes’ water quality has been ranked as “outstanding” by official EU bodies. A visit to Bayreuth’s Eremitage is just perfect for an extremely posh picnic. It’s also very tranquil in Bamberg’s Hain city park in the Upper Franconian local recreational area. The Jahnwiese is excellent for a family picnic in Bamberg as there’s plenty of space to let off steam. Or go on a discovery tour together in Volkspark Marienburg in Nuremberg. Besides the large playground, a mini golf course and water playground awaits you here. Picnic fans can also look forward to a rich variety of natural scenery and superb water quality for swimming at the Große Brombachsee lake in Central Franconia’s Pleinfeld.

Eastern Bavaria

There is also a variety of opportunities for picnics in Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria, the two administrative districts situated furthest east in Bavaria. The City of Regensburg has beautiful Medieval spots in the old town, but there are even more highlights for a picnic. These include the Donaupark green space, the Winzerer Höhen with a view over the city or Aberdeenpark. The Upper Palatinate town of Wackersdorf is also a worthwhile day trip destination. And the green fields around Murner See lake invite you to relax and indulge there afterwards. Lower Bavaria borders directly onto Upper Palatinate and there are beautiful lakes that you can visit there, too: Two lakes with inviting sunbathing lawns are Friedenhain-See in Straubing and Freudensee in the climatic spa town of Hauzenberg. Discover the unspoilt areas around the shores and the untouched natural scenery.

More than just a regional capital

Munich is Bavaria’s regional capital and is therefore not short of first-class options for a picnic. Whether it’s the famous English Garden on the west bank of the Isar, the Hofgarten with its Baroque park or Maximilian park with its just under 40-metre high Angel of Peace. However, idyllic spots and fascinating lakes also await you outside Munich in Upper Bavaria. These include, above all, Thumsee lake with its public sunbathing lawns situated in the conservation area in Bad Reichenhall. One picnic highlight is the „Der Thumsee brennt“ open air concert organised there every year with pieces played by the Bad Reichenhall Philharmonic Orchestra.

The well-known picnic lakes in Upper Bavaria also include Tegernsee and Starnberger See. Our tip: On the eastern shore of Starnberger See near Ambach there are several sunbathing lawns with a total area of more than 14 hectares.

From the Donauspitz to Lake Constance

A large variety of places also await nature and picnic lovers to explore in Bavaria’s Swabia. Starting in the North in Donauwörth with the Donauspitz to the Auwaldsee near Lauingen and Forggensee and Lake Constance situated in the South. The 63-kilometre long Lake Constance is a real attraction for recreational athletes who want to earn their picnic first. Whether it’s swimming, sailing, windsurfing or a cycling tour around Lake Constance, there’s something for everyone here.
