Digitalization in focus: Tech Mahindra opens branch office in Munich with its 7th co-innovation centre worldwide

The software provider which is based in India has opened a branch office in Munich, with 120 employees. The new development also includes a Makers Lab, which in the form of a technology forge and co-innovation centre, has the purpose of advancing innovations – primarily in the field of digital transformation – on a customer-focused, agile and cooperative basis.

On 19th June 2018, the waiting was finally over: in a celebratory atmosphere and in the presence of numerous guests, Tech Mahindra opened its new offices on the Riesstraße. As honorary guests, CIO and member of the board of Telefonica Deutschland Holding AG, Guido Eidman, the Indian Consul General Rajaram, the Bavarian Minister for Digitalization Eisenreich and Mr. Kapp from Munich City Council addressed the new team and partners of Tech Mahindra, before cutting the red ribbon to officially celebrate the opening. The Invest in Bavaria team was also invited and we were able to gain some great impressions of the strategy, the new offices and the initial products which we were shown.

Networking in the forge for technology - co-innovation centre for DigitalizationTech

Mahindra is implementing its new business model in Munich known as the Software Factory of the Future.  It consists primarily of an innovative delivery platform which is responsible for digitalizing all of the business and development processes in full, as well as a Makers Lab which is integrated in the offices. The Makers Lab is a forge for ideas and technology which is aligned on a regional and cooperative basis. In close cooperation with customers and partners of Tech Mahindra as well as start-ups, students and research institutes, its goal is to develop innovative concepts and put them to the test. It also works in the field of disruptive technologies, including artificial intelligence, the internet of things, robotics, AR/VR and transfer technology. Amit Kumar Jain, Vice President Tech Mahindra GmbH, explains:

Digitalization is forcing almost every company to completely rethink its business model and to realign it where necessary. To support companies during this time of change, with the model of the Software Factory of the Future and Makers Lab, we are providing the software business with a new basis. For the aforementioned areas of technology, we are creating “Communities of Expertise” in the region.

The Munich Makers Lab is the 7th of its kind in the world – Tech Mahindra has additional laboratories in England, the USA and India. The new approach amounts to an exciting role for an IT service provider with a strong emphasis on partnership. In Munich, Telefonica Germany is the first customer and partner for this model.

Long-term investments in Bavaria, customer proximity and the ideal conditions

From their Munich office in Riesstrasse 20, the 120 employees offer consulting services, business process outsourcing and re-engineering as well as system integration services and digital platforms and solutions for the digital transformation of businesses. The focus markets are manufacturing, telecommunications, media and entertainment, automotive as well as banks, insurance companies and financial services providers. Over the next three years, the team at the Munich location is to be doubled to almost 250 employees.

Vikram Nair, President of Tech Mahindra Europe, emphasized the importance of the new laboratory for Tech Mahindra and gave reasons for the choice of Munich as a location:

The opening of our centre for research and development - the Makers Lab - represents a clear commitment to the economic region of Munich and Bavaria and an important step forwards for Tech Mahindra in the whole of Germany. With our long-term investments, we are planning to create many highly skilled jobs in the region. With the Makers Lab, we are also offering a centre for technology in which new business start-ups, customers, partner companies, scientists and students can put their ideas and concepts to the test. With the biggest start-up scene in Bavaria and numerous research institutes and universities, Munich boasts the ideal conditions for our investments.
