Life Sciences in Bavaria (part 1): Innovation throughout Bavaria

Biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, digitalisation of the healthcare sector – life sciences are an increasingly important topic in the German economy. There are countless innovations in this sector and many of them are from Bavaria. Hubs for a whole range of different segments have developed throughout Bavaria over the last few decades. We present Bavaria’s BioTech hotspots in this series of articles.

Munich, Straubing, Regensburg, Würzburg and Nuremberg metropolitan region – that’s how spread out the locations for life sciences are between Franconia, Lower and Upper Bavaria. But what would the individual clusters be without an efficient Bavarian-wide network?

The Industrielle Biotechnologie Bayern Netzwerk – in short: IBB Netzwerk – has been taking on the task of networking its more than 100 partners from major industry, SME and research since 2008. IBB Netzwerk GmbH catalyses the implementation of innovative biotechnological processes and procedures The total volume of the 18 research and development projects is roughly EUR 48 million.

The BioM Biotech Cluster based in Munich also works throughout the region. Its network currently brings together 50 biotech companies with roughly 600 employees. BioM sees one of its jobs as being cluster management. In the first instance this entails supporting firms and start-ups in the form of consultancy, further training and various network events. The non-profit organisation also thinks beyond Bavaria’s borders. Its “outgoing services” assist SMEs in internationalising their businesses. The “incoming services” help foreign investors, companies or professionals in their search for Bavarian partners. BioM has been able to complete more than 200 company foundations over the last 20 years as a result.

Our Tuesday blog post “Starting up and growing in Munich’s cluster” highlights specifically what is happening in the Munich metropolitan region with regard to life sciences.
