Aigner: “With BAYERN DIGITAL we are promoting Bavaria as a games location.”
MUNICH Today Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs and Media, Ilse Aigner, will visit the Bavarian joint booth at the leading trade fair 'Gamescom' in Cologne. Upon visiting the trade fair she explains: “The computer games industry is a perfect example of a business segment which is all-digital. It drives innovation in other media-related areas and the conventional economy. This becomes apparent when looking at smartwatches, functional clothing or education.”
For six years, the Bavarian state government has been promoting the development of computer games which are considered to be of great educational or cultural value. Aigner: “We support game developers with funds from the Bavarian movie and television fund (FilmFernsehFonds Bayern). So far we have been able to support 64 projects with close to EUR 3.5 million. In the future, I would like to promote this creative potential through BAYERN DIGITAL as well.” Aigner is already working on establishing the necessary conditions.
She also supports game developers with further measures such as the establishment of a games hub at the business incubator WERK1. “The diversity of Bavaria's games industry is proof of Bavaria's quality as a location, with about 200 companies active in this segment. Many game studios were founded as a start-up in Bavaria and are internationally successful today. Bavaria benefits from this not only from an economic but also from a cultural perspective”, says Aigner.
The State of Bavaria is attractive for many foreign companies from the games and software industry, too. Aigner: By restructuring the promotion of technology we put greater attention to the development of IT and software as an interface technology. “In this way, we are getting Bavaria ready for the digital future”
