Aigner/Spaenle: “Bavaria is becoming the leading region of the blossoming digital era”
Today, the Bavarian cabinet approved the concept for the Zentrum Digitalisierung.Bayern (ZD.B), acting on the initiative introduced by Ilse Aigner, Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs and Dr. Ludwig Spaenle, Minister of Science.
“Digitalisation is not only the next industrial revolution. Digital change affects every economic and social sector. Bavaria has the opportunity to define this global revolution as well as reap the benefits. This is our mission. Zentrum Digitalisierung.Bayern is one of the key components of our BAYERN DIGITIAL digitalisation strategy which aims to promote the emergence of digitalisation in Bavaria's business and science sector. The ZD.B will allow us to combine strengths and create a research, cooperation and start-up platform for all of Bavaria”, says Aigner, Minister of Economic Affairs.
“With a total of 20 professors, specifically ten new professors each for universities as well as universities of applied sciences, we are well on our way to further expanding our outstanding areas of competence in research for the digitalisation sector within the State”, claims Dr. Spaenle, Minister of State. “As a result, we will be able to strengthen research at the universities in future fields of digitalisation to a great extent. We have already begun these efforts in our current state budget”. A commission of experts are identifying the leading-edge subject fields which should benefit from additional investments in Bavaria. Subsequently, the professors will be assigned to individual universities in a competitive, science-driven process, says Spaenle when describing the procedure. Through the allocation of new professors, the Bavarian state government seeks to extend a network across the State, thus providing impetus for the region. In addition, it is possible, and in fact preferred, to that multiple universities submit joint, coordinated applications.
The ZD.B focuses on the development of a platform on key topics of digitalisation that forges a link between university research, non-university research and industrial development. Initially, three platforms on the topics “IT security”, “digitalised production” and “networked mobility” have been outlined. Two additional platforms on the topics “digital medical science/health” and “digitalisation in the energy sector” will be added in the near future. The total volume of proposed measures amounts to almost EUR 116 million euros for the 2015-2019 period.
The next step calls for renting premises in Garching for the Zentrum. The commission of experts will study the strengths and weaknesses of the individual regions and the action required. Activities and projects across Bavaria shall commence immediately.
Aigner: “ZD.B enables us to promote research and innovation across all of Bavaria, in turn allowing all the regions to gain fresh momentum in digitalisation. ZD.B has made a significant contribution to help the State on its way to becoming the leading region for digitalisation. Following Bavaria's industrialisation and the Bavarian state government's “High-Tech-Offensive” (a high-tech initiative), we are now shaping the future: Bayern digital.”
