Study shows good prospects for Memmingen Airport

Aiwanger: "Memmingen Airport has the potential to relieve the Munich metropolitan area"

MUNICH Memmingen Airport strengthens the regional economy in Bavaria. This is the result of a recent study that looks at the airport’s economic effects on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Allgäu region in particular is currently benefiting from the transformation of the former military air base into a commercial airport.

"Memmingen Airport is an important location factor for the region. It has the potential to relieve Munich Airport and therefore the traffic around the regional capital. It is being embraced by business travellers from the region and tourists can travel directly to the Allgäu. This doesn’t just reduce the amount of time passengers have to spend, but also reduces the environmental impact of transit traffic to and from Munich,” Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger evaluates the study results. Around 13 percent of regional companies use Memmingen Airport for business travel.

Aiwanger: “If Memmingen airport is strategically developed, this proportion may increase. Munich Airport could be relieved even more.” Memmingen will also play an important role in the planned Bavarian airport concept. According to the coalition agreement, the Bavarian airport concept is intended to network Bavaria's airports more and reduce pollutant and noise emissions.

The study was commissioned by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy and prepared by the ifo institute together with Kempten University of Applied Sciences. It shows a steady increase in passenger numbers. Ten years after its opening, approximately 1.17 million passengers used Memmingen Airport in 2017. Experts also predict positive development in the future and expect annual passenger growth of around 3.2 percent by 2028. The study is available at www.stmwi.bayern.de/tourismus/daten-fakten/.
