Concepts for another seven digital start-up centres

Aiwanger: “Optimal consideration of the regions’ individual strengths”

MUNICH  Seven more digital start-up centre (DGZ) locations were selected by the Bavarian state government in all government districts outside the metropolitan areas in October. In the meantime, every new DGZ has a prepared concept. Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs, Hubert Aiwanger, informed the Council of Ministers today about the current status of these important digital incubators. Aiwanger: “All locations have now worked out a detailed concept. A jury of experts consisting of the heads of the existing DGZ and the BayStartUP managing director, has checked the concepts. The jury was very impressed by the high quality of the concepts.” The jury’s ideas for improvement were also passed on to the applicants so that they can integrate them into the funding application later on. “I am particularly delighted that the seven new digital start-up centres’ concepts address the respective region’s individual strengths. This provides even greater value added for the area. Another 40 million euro is earmarked for the digital start-up centres in the current budget, which is just being discussed in the Bavarian Parliament.
 
The following strategies were defined in terms of content for the announced locations:
 
Manching (brigkAIR), Upper Bavaria: “Drones are the digitisation of the aviation industry” - in keeping with this motto, a network and a promotion mechanism is to be developed in cooperation with local institutions with high development expertise in aviation for start-ups in the market of unmanned aerial vehicles.
 
Aiwanger: “Our goal is to establish the region around Manching Test Aerodrome as a technology and innovation region for 3D mobility and expand the existing, strong expertise for emerging technologies. The Ingolstadt region has already achieved international visibility with the Urban Air Mobility initiative.” Start-ups from all over the world are offered a unique locational advantage through technology expertise, production facilities and test field environments.
 
Günzburg district (DGZG), Swabia: Big data based marketing opens up opportunities for innovative and new business ideas and plays an important role in almost every industry. The Günzburg district digital start-up centre (DGZG) places this future topic at the centre of its activities. Aiwanger: “The DGZG in Leipheim is to create the perfect space for business development for all digital entrepreneurs. In addition to the attractive local infrastructure, we will build up a strong network management.”
 
The latter assists potential new enterprises with proactive support, professional events, network meetings and promoting close cooperation with the local business community. Together with the big data based marketing technology transfer centre (TTZBM) in Günzburg as well as the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences, the whole region is ready for the opportunities of digitisation. The region has already embarked on the digital path with the award-winning Digital Shopping City Günzburg project. This environment, which has knowledge transfer, best practice applications and a strong enterprise landscape to show for itself, is the ideal breeding ground for new business ideas.
 
Rottal Inn/Freyung-Grafenau/Pfarrkirchen (GreG), Lower Bavaria: GreG - the cross-border start-up centre is a group concept by the Lower Bavarian Rottal-Inn and Freyung-Grafenau districts that integrates itself into the existing Lower Bavaria GZDN Association.
 
Aiwanger: “The special feature at GreG is the cross-border cooperation with Austria and the Czech Republic. The two locations Pfarrkirchen and Freyung are ideal for this. In addition, there is the potential of the internationally focused European Campus Rottal-Inn in Pfarrkirchen and the Technology Campus Freyung with its application-based research.”
 
By linking the GreG up with the existing start-up centres LINK (Landshut), ITC (Deggendorf) and INN.KUBATOR (Passau) and the various initiatives to do with digitisation and entrepreneurship, a Lower Bavarian wide network is created to support the start-up scene looking beyond the national borders.
 
Parsberg (DGZ-PAR), Upper Palatinate: The DGZ Parsberg is the building block in a new innovation trialogue. Cheap rental space is available for start-ups, university or project spin-offs at the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule and Deggendorf Institute of Technology’s new technology campus. A joint infrastructure and research collaboration promote cooperation. Maker spaces, test areas for application and production as well as co-working and shared production spaces are also made available in neighbouring businesses.
 
Aiwanger: “The main focuses in Parsberg are material analyses, laser-based and additive manufacturing as well as digitised production and process chains. In the large trade and industrial area with 80,000 square metres in total, there is plenty of space for growth after a successful start-up.”
 
This bundling of locations is to make the distance between the idea, prototype, optimisation and production as short as possible. In addition, young people will be able to go through the entire development chain (school, apprenticeship, studies, start-up) in one place.
 
Embedded into the existing digital start-up initiative in the Upper Palatinate and the Neumarkt administrative district’s IT offensive as well as being supported by a sponsorship and cooperation network of leading, regional technology companies, the DGZ Parsberg will offer a broad coaching, consulting and events portfolio, which is actively run by its own personnel, as the new location in the Bavarian start-up network.
 
Ansbach (DGZ Ansbach for the West Central Franconia region), Central Franconia: the digital minds of today and tomorrow will meet at the DGZ Ansbach: users of digital innovations from industry and SMEs, digitisation drivers from start-ups and IT SMEs, supporters from education and science as well as all interested parties from the region.
 
Aiwanger: “The shared vision is: Ansbach and the West Central Franconia region develop into a model region for digitisation in rural areas and create an ecosystem for digital start-ups and digital transformation in businesses. The DGZ Ansbach will be located in the immediate vicinity of Ansbach University of Applied Sciences. A modern working environment for collaborative projects, workshops, events as well as IT and Internet of Things developments is to be developed there.”
 
Another point of contact for students and innovation teams will be set up at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences’ Triesdorf campus.
 
A business network is to become the crucial platform for digital transformation. The focus is on the pre-seed phase (teaching expertise and methods outside studying, vocational training and work), the development of expertise in businesses and the initiation of collaboration projects between universities and enterprises.
 
The DGZ Ansbach is backed by Ansbach city and district, Ansbach University of Applied Sciences, the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences Triesdorf campus and the Ansbach office of the Central Franconia Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Chamber of Trades and Crafts for Central Franconia. The whole of the West Central Franconia region will be involved in the DGZ Ansbach through them.
 
Coburg (Digital Manufactory Coburg), Upper Franconia: The Digital Manufactory concept picks up on the positive characteristics of traditional industrial factories in the Coburg region (including porcelain, upholstered furniture and toy factories) and reproduces them in new digital production processes.
 
Aiwanger: “In Coburg, we want to meet the requirements of today's customers for tailor-made products that are sustainably produced, in particular with raw material and energy efficiency, and strengthen the regional economic cycles as a result.
 
Network activities that have been successfully initiated in recent years together with DGZ Bamberg, should find the urgently needed point of contact for innovative ideas and digital start-ups at the Digital Manufactory start-up centre. The CREAPOLIS university project’s maker space that is already in use, the new Digital Manufactory start-up centre (co-working space and plants for smart production and Industry 4.0 applications) as well as the inter-municipal commercial area in planning, are coordinated to provide an environment where ideas and innovations from the Coburg economic and industrial area are turned into top achievements as well as high-tech future products with higher commercial value added.
 
Thanks to the cooperation of start-ups with science, research and industry, the new DGZ will at the same time become a knowledge and network hub where increased efficiency in resources, material and energy in production will be a central topic. Economic sustainability and strengthening the regional value creation chains is the agenda here.
 
Lohr am Main (Starthouse in Spessart), Lower Franconia: The Starthouse im Spessart digital start-up centre in the middle of Lohr am Main is to offer young entrepreneurs a platform for their first steps on the challenging path to successfully founding their own start-up..
 
Aiwanger: “Digital pioneers, movers and shakers receive a variety of support services in a modern working environment. Among other things, we focus here on coaching from BayStartUP, innovation methods and the building and testing of prototypes.”
 
The modern premises include co-working spaces, a conference room and a social lounge area. Starthouse im Spessart sees itself as a centre that builds bridges between start-ups, universities and established companies from the region. It has an extensive network of supporters and consultants. Resulting in an innovation ecosystem developing in Main Spessart that unites economics, science and society and opens up new approaches for everyone involved.
