Where is the top location for research-intensive start-ups?
According to a study led by the Centre for European Economic Research, the administrative region of Upper Franconia holds a top position when it comes to start-ups in the research-intensive industry.
Research-intensive industry leading the way
Start-up activities in the state of Bavaria are increasing – the exact opposite of the trend in western Germany as a whole, where the number of company foundations is falling. The administrative regions of Upper Bavaria and Upper Franconia are particularly successful. In Upper Franconia, it is the towns of Bamberg, Coburg and Hof that stand out. Large numbers of start-ups are seen in sectors in which industrial companies conduct a lot of research and development. According to the study by the Centre for European Economic Research, the administrative region in the north-east holds a top position when it comes to start-ups in the research-intensive industry. The region boasts many years of experience in industry, which can still be seen to this day. 105 out of every 1,000 residents are employed in industry – one of the highest levels in the European Union.
Attractive economic prospects
The business news from Upper Franconia is generally positive. According to the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Upper Franconia, the economy there is thriving. In the latest economic survey, the member companies not only gave a very positive assessment of the current economic situation, but were also optimistic about the future. 94 per cent of the companies questioned believe that the business situation will improve or stay the same. Upper Franconia's economy is benefiting from globalisation and increasing export figures around the world. These positive expectations are also leading to a rise in demand for staff. 7,000 new jobs are predicted to be created by May 2015.
