Free State of Bavaria: Funding Call for Innovations in Chip Design

Companies and projects based in Bavaria that deal with innovations in the field of electronic systems and process technologies can apply for funding from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. The project consortium must consist of at least two partners and include one company. The participation of universities, colleges and non-university research institutions is possible. The targeted project duration extends to a maximum of 2026.

As part of the “Electronic Systems and Process Technologies” the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy (Bayerische Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie) is funding the development of solutions and applications in the field of intelligent, electronic systems that advance digitalisation in Bavaria and support the mastering of future challenges.

Chip design is the focus of funding from the Free State of Bavaria

The funding addresses projects that are characterised by innovations with novel hardware approaches in the following subject areas, among others:

  • Microelectronics
  • Microsystems technology
  • Power electronics
  • Sensors
  • Actuators
  • Optoelectronics
  • Photonics
  • Metrology
  • Quantum technology

Projects that involve forward-looking research and development work in the area of chip design and thus address a fundamental process step in the value chain of microelectronic components are of central importance. This also includes, for example, hardware solutions that relate to application scenarios in the area of the 5G and 6G mobile radio standards and thus advance the networking of digital devices in the (industrial) Internet of Things (IoT).

Innovative technological approaches that integrate new functionalities into electronic systems and increase their efficiency and combine leading-edge technologies in a targeted manner (such as three-dimensional integrated circuits and so-called chiplet-based systems) can also be funded.

Efficiency and sustainability along the entire value chain

Sustainable electronics are also part of the funding. In addition to power-saving processes and systems, the focus is particularly on technologies that are highly resilient in terms of their manufacturing and safety, as well as highly robust and reliable electronics.

General conditions:

The project consortium must consist of at least two partners and include at least one company; the participation of universities, colleges and non-university research institutions is possible. Eligible work is that which is carried out within Bavaria. SMEs are particularly encouraged to submit project outlines. The project is scheduled to run until 2026 at the most.

Project proposals can be submitted as of now and until the deadline of 28.03.2023 at 14:00 via the corresponding internet portal. You can find more information here.

If you have any questions about the funding call, please do not hesitate to contact us. Is your company active in the field of chip design and are you interested in the advantages of Bavaria as a business location? – we look forward to hearing from you.
