Free State of Bavaria: Calls for funding launched in the aerospace sector

Bavarian companies and projects that deal with innovative solutions and applications in the aerospace sector can receive funding from the Free State of Bavaria again in 2021. We have summarised the latest funding calls in the aerospace sector.

Bavaria is internationally regarded as a leading aerospace location in the entire value chain from research and development to practical application. As part of the Hightech Agenda Plus (HTA+), Bavaria will be providing additional funding for the aerospace sector over the next few years, among other things to promote disruptive innovations as well as further technological developments. The Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy (StMWi) is thereby making an important contribution to promoting innovation in the aerospace sector throughout Germany. The project sponsorship for the current funding in the aerospace sector is held by IABG.

Bavarian Aviation Research Programme: BayLu25-II

The successful BayLu25 programme from 2020 is being continued. The focus is on research and technology projects that emphasise productivity, efficiency and sustainability in the aerospace sector. The aim of this funding programme is also to extend the innovations and projects developed in the aerospace sector to other industries such as the automotive industry, medical technology or mechanical engineering – keyword: cross-industry innovation.

The new BayLu25-II addresses research and development projects in the following areas:

  • Disruptive technologies and innovative systems (eco-efficient flying)
  • Basic technologies
  • Hydrogen technologies and (hybrid) electronic flying (zero-emission aircraft)
  • Technology demonstration

All application procedures for the calls for funding in the aerospace sector are designed in two stages. A project proposal must be submitted in an outline procedure first. If the application is shortlisted, you will be asked to submit a full application.

The deadline for project outlines for BayLu25-II is 19 May 2021 at 12 noon.

Bavarian Space Research Programme (RaFo Bayern)

The “special space programme focusing on mini-satellites and new launchers” is anchored in the High-Tech Agenda Plus framework programme. With this funding, Bavaria intends to make a significant contribution to extensive research and development in space travel. The programme is geared to provide funding to the development of promising technologies and applications:

  • Satellite technology (space technology)
  • New launcher systems (focus on mini-launchers)
  • Space applications and services
  • Safety and sustainability
  • Space networking/connectivity and exploration

The deadline for project outlines for the Bavarian Space Research Programme (RaFo Bayern) is also 19 May 2021 at 12 noon.

Call for funding for the Holistic Air Mobility Initiative Bavaria

The Air Mobility Initiative aims to create a holistic innovation approach by industry, universities and non-university research institutions in Bavaria. New as well as existing concepts for air mobility are to be further developed and integrated into the existing infrastructure in the long term. Funding is provided for projects from a wide range of aviation fields, with a focus on disruptive technology and innovation approaches. The following key topics will be addressed:

  • Disruptive technologies and innovative systems (eco-efficient flying)
  • Digitalisation, Industry 4.0 and artificial intelligence
  • Hydrogen technologies and (hybrid) electric flying (zero-emission aircraft)
  • Technology demonstration

Project outlines must be submitted by 1 June 2021 at 12 noon.
