Fraunhofer Application Centre for Wireless Sensor Technology opened in Coburg

With support from the Free State of Bavaria, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) is working together with Coburg University of Applied Sciences to set up an Application Centre for Wireless Sensor Technology. This will develop solutions with extremely energy-saving, wireless sensor networks for the fields of production, construction, healthcare and agriculture. The centre was opened in July at Coburg University of Applied Sciences.

The objective of the Fraunhofer Application Centre for Wireless Sensor Technology is to provide wireless sensor and sensor network technologies for a range of application fields and to develop customised solutions. Possible areas of use may include monitoring bridges for safety, monitoring environmental conditions on productive land in order to optimise the use of fertilisers, and patient-friendly support for rehabilitation exercises using wireless sensors. "We are delighted to have the opportunity to expand the research topic of Wireless Sensor Technology at Coburg University of Applied Sciences," said Prof. Albert Heuberger, Head of Fraunhofer IIS. "In future, the Fraunhofer Application Centre will bring together the expertise of the institutions involved and provide cooperation partners from industry for consultancy and solutions," adds the Head of the Institute. Bavaria's Secretary of State for the Economy, Katja Hessel, also welcomed the positive choice of Coburg and Upper Franconia as the location. "With the support of the Free State of Bavaria, the Fraunhofer Application Centre for Wireless Sensor Technology will put new technologies into practice in future. We are providing this cooperation with the university with EUR 2.5 million of funding in order to strengthen its ties to business."
