Five minutes with... Stephan Adam, Managing director of IDE-NewParts Compressors GmbH, the compressor manufactory in Raubling

Bavaria's economy is full of life – and the people who live and work here make the biggest contribution to this. In our monthly “Five minutes with...” section, we introduce an interesting person from business and research. This month, we talked to Stephan Adam, Managing director of IDE-NewParts Compressors. The manufacturer of high-pressure compressors supplies users in industry, medical engineering, offshore, fire brigades, motor sports and scuba diving.

As a manufacturer of high-pressure compressors, you are active in a wide variety of industries – what makes your company so special?

IDE stands for International Divecompressors Engineering – we supply breathing-air compressors as well as storage facilities and filling stations and, of course, the related services. We clearly focus on maintaining a technological edge and the highest quality standards. As a family-run business, we can react flexibly to our customers' demands. Our products are used in many industrial sectors and everywhere where pure breathing air is required. Recently, we fulfilled the criteria for admission to the Verband der Deutschen Manufakturen (German Manufactory Association), marking yet another milestone.

In which sector did IDE first make a name for itself?

We started in 1989 as a general importer for scuba diving equipment made by an Italian company. Over time, we were increasingly addressed by professional divers, fire brigades, the German Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and rescue services. These customers have very demanding requirements when it comes to quality. This is why, at the end of 1999, we began developing and building (including made-to-order) our own compressors and systems. Since 2003, we mainly utilise compressor blocks in a range from 60 to 240 bar, which we build ourselves. In 2009, we acquired NewParts Europe, which marked the beginning of our production at the Brannenburg site. In December 2014, we moved to a newly constructed site in Raubling.

We have been able to substantially increase our sales in recent years: approx. 65% of our turnover is achieved through exports.

Where is your technological edge most clearly visible?

From 8th to 13th June, we participated in the Interschutz trade fair, which is held every five years in Hannover. There we experienced a tremendous demand for our combined control systems for filling systems and permanent air quality monitoring for pollutants including CO, CO2, O2, SO2, NO, NO2, moist, flammable gases and, primarily, oil. We have the entire portfolio of portable and stationary breathing-air compressors, storage facilities, filling stations and we offer excellent service. It very well may be that, compared to the industry average, we invest more money in development – this pays off in the long run.

What do the growth perspectives look like for your company?

We are experiencing slow, but steady growth. Having an excellent network of distributors is very important to us and our customers, and that is something that is not created overnight. We already have a strong presence in the EU and in North and South Africa and we are now looking for suitable partners in North and South America; we are very optimistic that we will establish ourselves in those markets as well.

What location factors in Bavaria are particularly important to you?

Of course, one has to name the good infrastructure. We have the best connections to anywhere in the world from here. But as a manufacturer, we are also heavily dependent on the expertise of our specialist staff, and we rely on high-quality suppliers.

This concentration of excellent specialists, who also work at our suppliers, is also largely due to the excellent working environment, the high recreational value and the Bavarian way of life and quality of living. All this ultimately results in higher quality of work. We also benefit from the close proximity and the uncomplicated access to development partners and research institutes and institutions and numerous funding sources, particularly in the area of innovations.

What are your favourite recreational spots in the Inntal valley?

My family and I frequently go to Chiemsee region, and my dog and I know all the ins and outs of all the local mountains! The Alpine foothills are simply magnificent, the people are friendly and open-minded; in actual fact, it's a little piece of paradise. Here, there are no limits when it comes to sports activities such as mountain climbing, paragliding and mountain biking. And the region has much to offer in terms of cultural activities. I also like to attend festivals and concerts. Our company is also involved in sponsoring the annual opera festival in Immling.
