Bavaria's media-makers of tomorrow
Continuing digitisation has permanently altered the media landscape and created entirely new career opportunities. If Bavaria is to remain Germany's number one media location, the state will need qualified young professionals in more than 200 different professions.
The phrase “I do something in media” is a thing of the past – today, jobs in the media sector require specialised expertise and qualified training. It is not just “something”, but real expert knowledge that is needed in the print, radio, TV and online, film and game design sectors, and even media management, media technology and music.
Demand for qualified specialist staff is especially high in Bavaria because the state is Germany's number one media location, making the need for a qualified next generation considerable. That is why MedienCampus Bayern e.V was founded as far back as 1998. The organisation has made it its business to promote and coordinate media-related education and training in Bavaria. With 105 members including universities, academies and associations as well as media like Bayerische Rundfunk, the society is Bavaria's central institution for media education and training. As a member of MedienNetzwerk Bayern, the MedienCampus is also well connected within the Bavarian media environment
Recognising trends and developments
The MedienCampus is the first point of contact for school pupils, apprentices, students and graduates who are interested in working in the media sector. The society provides information on professions in the sector, apprenticeships and career paths, as well as on degree programmes offered by Bavarian universities.
The choice has grown significantly in recent years. In the 2012/13 winter semester, Fresenius University of Applied Sciences launched its Bachelor's programme in Applied Media, which uses close cooperation with business. The Games Engineering degree course at TU München (TUM) teaches the basics of game development, while the University of Passau has founded Bavaria's first cross-media teaching editorial office.
Another key role of the MedienCampus Bayern is clear here: it is important to recognise sea changes, trends and developments in the media sector early on and to transform them into specific educational models. This is done in close consultation with the partners and members and always against the background of training the right specialist staff who can play an active role in shaping the media and safeguard Bavaria as a media location in the future.
FilmFernsehFonds Bayern and the Bayerische Landeszentrale für Medien
Besides the MedienCampus, other institutions in Bavaria also offer attractive opportunities for promoting the next generation. FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, for example, has a special programme for supporting young filmmakers. Around EUR 1.6 million per year are available to fund productions by the next generation, for example at the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF) and the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences (MHMK).
The Bayerische Landeszentrale für Medien (BLM), the regulatory authority for commercial broadcasting in Bavaria, also offers a wide range of programmes for promoting the next media generation in Bavaria. These include maintaining special training channels in which the media-makers of tomorrow can gain practical experience – be it front of the camera or microphone or in the background, in production or the development of new formats. There are also various workshops offering education and further training for young journalists.
Excellent educational institutions and their students are just one highlight of the media sector in Bavaria. If you want to know more, get in touch!
