Delegation trip Mar 08, 2016

Bavaria’s Digital Industry Returns to Texas

March is marked in red in the calendar of the creative and interactive sectors: the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) will be held in Austin, Texas, from 11th to 20th March 2016. SXSW combines festivals, conferences and specialist exhibitions covering film, music and interactive media.

This event is unmissable for Bavarian companies and start-ups. After all, creative idea generators and developers meet up with decision-makers, experts and investors. After their first successful trip to Austin last year, it is certain that SXSW is now a fixed date in the calendar of the digital economy. With 700 delegates including representatives from 50 Bavarian companies, the German delegation ranks third behind Canada and Great Britain. And the delegates can look forward to a very diverse programme: The topics of smart city, virtual reality or tech-to-go are very popular with the 30,000 participants, in particular during the SXSW Interactive event. But “traditional” topics will also receive their fair share of attention during the more than 1,000 lectures on e-commerce, web development, social media or interface design.

German innovation at the German Haus

German companies will present themselves and their technological innovations at the German Haus. The state of Bavaria and, for the first time, the city of Munich will participate in the presence in Austin as Platinum and Gold Partners, bringing together creative minds. Along with examples from daily practice, the diverse programme will also focus on the topic of networking. Start-ups and experts can exchange ideas on current industry topics and developments in workshops and discussion panels.

Josef Schmid, Munich’s Deputy Mayor, emphasised the importance of Bavaria’s and the state capital’s participation in the event. “Munich plays in the Champions League when it comes to creative locations in Europe. Munich’s participation in SXSW is an important milestone and a true highlight in an effort to further underscore the economic significance and provide effective support for participating companies.”

A big stage for Bavarian start-ups

Highlights also include the promoted Bavarian start-ups who have come along to SXSW. Among this year’s newcomers are DataLion, which will present a pitch for its dashboard solution for data visualisation; Cat Production, with their presentation technology; the ad tech provider KontextR; the 3D design experts from Konstrukt3 and the social entrepreneurs from nate.

And there are many more digital highlights. Icaros is also expected to spark great interest, opening up a new level of sports equipment paired with entertainment with its VR training unit. Even the traditional company Stabilo is breaking new ground, having been honoured at the CES show in Las Vegas earlier this year for its innovations in digital writing. And in Austin, too, the Stabilo DigiPen will once again demonstrate how electronic devices can be combined with our traditional way of writing.

We wish all start-ups and companies much success at SXSW. And don’t miss the daily after-show party at the German Haus!
