A new digital hub for Bavaria: e-health expertise in the Nuremberg metropolitan region

The first five hubs in Germany were chosen at the "Nationaler IT Gipfel" (National IT Summit) last year; further sites have now been selected to complete the Digital Hub Initiative. Alongside the Mobility Hub at UnternehmerTUM, which received hub status last year, and the InsurTech Hub in Munich, Europäische Metropolregion Nürnberg (EMN) e.V. has been selected as the official e-health hub.

The federal government has set out a range of criteria for the selection of the hubs. These include local operations of global industry leaders, a start-up community with the beginnings of a network and excellent research and education clusters. The hubs are to act as digital ecosystems with international resources – and that is exactly the mission that the metropolitan region has set itself for the e-health sector in particular.

Medical Valley: a pioneer in e-health

Medical Valley EMN e.V.
brings together more than 200 members from business, science, healthcare, networks and politics and has extensive experience in digital health, for example through coordinating the 'Modellregion digitale Gesundheitswirtschaft Franken' ('Franconia digital healthcare industry model region'). Medical Valley EMN e.V. is also the coordinator of the 'Digital health/medicine' platform at the Zentrum Digitalisierung.Bayern centre. The original headquarters are in Erlangen, but another site in Forchheim opened early this year and is to focus on the healthcare and information technology (e-health) sectors.

State Minister of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology Ilse Aigner said "I congratulate the Nuremberg/Erlangen metropolitan region and Medical Valley EMN e.V. on their successful application. We have already received the award for a 'Digital Hub' for the second time in Bavaria with the topic of e-health. This shows that Bavaria has an excellent infrastructure in the field of digitalisation, and that in a number of different sectors."
