Mobility location Bavaria: IAA, the world's largest motor show in Munich from 2021

In addition to Munich, Berlin and Hamburg were also shortlisted as venues for the motor show with its new concept. The state capital convinced the organisers with a comprehensive package of modern infrastructure, a variety of event locations and its relevance for research and industry.

IAA, the world's largest motor show , will not only take place at a new location in future, the concept is also being fundamentally revised. The goal: to develop the IAA from a pure motor show to a cross-industry platform for mobility. In addition to the car show, new sustainable approaches for the Smart City of the future geared towards people’s needs are to be developed with intelligent traffic concepts and the innovative networking of transport providers – including the Munich Metropolitan Region.

New trade show concept places high demands on the venue

In view of the new concept, it is no wonder that the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) , as the organiser of the IAA, has chosen the state capital as the future venue. In addition to the modern exhibition centre, Munich also boasts a large number of decentralised event locations, thus allowing for multi-location events that incorporate the local infrastructure. Munich, like Bavaria as a whole, also impresses as Europe's leading technology and industrial location. Numerous high-tech groups, SMEs and start-ups are based in Bavaria.

“Munich beat Berlin and Hamburg as a result of this. The three cities that were recently shortlisted as venues all submitted highly ambitious and convincing plans to further develop the IAA together with the VDA. It was a very close race, which I would like to thank everyone involved for.” – Hildegard Müller, President of the VDA

Bavaria as a hub for cross-industry innovation

With the revised concept, the IAA is opening up for new innovations beyond the boundaries of the classic car industry. For example, technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented & virtual reality (AR/VR), the Internet of Things (IoT) or IT security are becoming increasingly important in approaches such as Smart Mobility and Smart City – keyword: cross-industry innovation. It is precisely here that Munich offers the best conditions. The IAA will be held in the state capital for the first time in 2021.
