Materials for shaping the future
Materials science has advanced to become one of the major pillars of our industrial
society. Over 70 percent of the national product of western technologically
advanced countries are based either directly or indirectly on materials. New
materials are therefore the key to product and process innovations in decades
ahead.
Bavaria – the workshop for New Materials
Some 80 percent of the manufacturing companies operating in Bavaria are classed
in the sector of material manufacturers, processors and users. This group includes
around 3,700 businesses with approximately one million employees and annual
sales of over 210 billion EUR. This puts Bavaria in the international top league
in this interdisciplinary sector.
Market and partners in the field of New Materials
Excellent market potential
Bavaria is home to all the market leaders of the high-tech user sectors, such
as electrical, mechanical and automotive engineering, aerospace, bio and genetic
engineering, medical technology, ICT or energy and environmental technologies.
Bundled competence
- A major pillar in the New Materials Cluster is formed by the multi-site
Center of Excellence
New Materials with the parent company Kompetenzzentrum
Neue Materialien Nordbayern GmbH (KNMN) in Bayreuth and the operating
companies Neue Materialien
Bayreuth GmbH (NMB), Neue Materialien Fürth GmbH (NMF) and Neue Materialien
Würzburg (NMW). Neue
Materialien Fürth GmbH (NMF) and Neue
Materialien Würzburg (NMW).
Closely related and in close proximity to the company Neue Materialien Bayreuth
GmbH is the incubator Bayreuther
Gründerzentrum für Neue Materialien (BGZ). Here low-cost facilities and
innovation-friendly framework conditions are made available to young companies
operating in the field of new materials. The sites of the Center of Excellence
offer state of the art facilities and highly qualified personnel from R&D
companies, first and foremost for SMEs in materials engineering.
The focus of expertise of the companies located at the sites is
organized in such a way that the competence and facilities ideally supplement
each other to provide a high-power research and development center. This organization
is aimed to provide research services between university materials research
and industrial application. At the companies the respective tasks focus on:
- Neue Materialien
Bayreuth: Composite materials and material compounds, plastics, technical
ceramics, ultra-lightweight engineering with coated fabrics, sintering
processes for hard metals, smart cutting tools, optimization of metal
welding work
- Neue Materialien
Fürth: Magnesium and aluminium – studies on rheological behavior,
Thixomolding, extrusion molding of powders (conform technology), surface
coating, plastic molded parts, plasma treatment of polymer materials
- Neue Materialien
Würzburg: function materials through integration of piezoceramics,
PZT-fiber modules, rheological liquids, preparation of material data,
design concepts in the field of adaptronics.
- The Plastics Network of Franconia (Kunststoff-Netzwerk
Frankene.V.) is an information and cooperation platform of the plastics
processing industry in Northern Bavaria. There are over 40 companies cooperating
in this network.
- The Landshut Lightweight Engineering cluster (Leichtbau-Cluster
Landshut) is a network of over 140 companies, research institutions and
service providers for promoting cross-sectoral cooperation in lightweight
construction technologies. The cluster focuses on:
- Lightweight engineering materials
- Lightweight construction
- Production technologies
Attractive environment for New Materials
With their internationally renowned research projects Bavarian universities,
universities of applied sciences and non-university
research institutions are competent partners for companies:
- Institutes of Materials
Sciences at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (semi-conductors, metals,
polymers, ceramics, glass, composite materials),
- Faculty for Applied
Sciences of the University of Bayreuth (semiconductors, polymers, ceramics,
glass, metals, composite materials, functional materials))
- Faculty of Mechanical
Engineering in Garching and new Research
Reactor FRMII of the Munich Technical University (semiconductors, metals,
polymers, ceramics, glass)
- Materials study group of the Central
Institute for Medical Technology of the TU Munich in Garching (bio-compatible
materials)
- Materials study group of the Faculty
of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Würzburg (semiconductors,
opto-electronic components, bio-membranes)
- Materials study group of the Mathematical-Science
Faculty of Augsburg University (magnetic and highly conductive materials,
Application Center for Materials and Environmental Reseach)
- Research focus on metallic,
semi-conductive and magnetic nanostructures at the Faculty for Physics
of the University of Regensburg
- Fraunhofer Institute for
Silicate Research in Würzburg (Glass, ceramics, copolymers, composite
materials, functional materials),
- Süddeutsches Kunststoffzentrum
(SKZ) (Plastics Engineering Center) in Würzburg
- Bavarian Center
for Applied Energy Research) (Photovoltaics, special materials for heat
insulation and transport)
- ATZ Development Center in
Sulzbach-Rosenberg (Alternative hard magnetic materials, laser to sinter
powder for rapid prototyping)
- Universities of applied sciences including those in Nuremberg
(materials) Ansbach(plastics)
as well as Rosenheim
and FORCARBON)
- Bavarian Research Cooperation for Materials (FORMAT)
Well-qualified workforce for New Materials
Bavaria’s excellent training in the field of New Materials forms the basis
of the outstanding world-renowned qualification of its workforce. A committed
and highly qualified workforce gives Bavaria a competitive edge on international
markets.
Bavarian initiatives and programs in the field of New Materials
Bavaria supports material innovation projects of commercial companies. The
special program “New Materials in Bavaria“ is aimed at companies
which manufacture and process materials and promotes technology transfer and
cooperation in materials clusters. Cross-company R&D projects can receive
state grants as “Cooperation projects“.
Attractive project promotion
Bavaria extensively promotes Research
projects through its Research and Development Programs and through the Bavarian
Research Foundation. Certain regions in Bavaria are entitled to special
grants.
Materials - locations in Bavaria
Based on the extreme cross-sectional characteristics, materials companies are
found all over Bavaria, with research institutions geared to the materials sector
forming scientific hubs.
