Long the backbone of the global economy information and communications technologies are the basic technology for virtually all industrial and service sectors and, as cross-sectional technology, they are the engine of growth in many application fields. For example, in Bavaria’s key field of industry, the automotive sector, a large share of the innovations in the coming years will be in IT.

Bavaria – a top address for ICT

With a workforce of over 300,000 people operating in information and communications technology Bavaria is one of the most important IT locations in the world. This makes Bavaria the Number One region in Germany in this sector as well.

Bavaria’s over 20,000 high-tech enterprises represent

  • 36 percent of the manpower in German computer manufacturing,
  • 39 percent of the workforce in German electronic components production and
  • 40 percent of the German employment in the electronic media sector.

Bavaria accounts for 40 percent of all software companies in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Because of these excellent conditions for growth many of the world’s leading companies in the fields of IT development, IT services and applications have set up their European headquarters or branch establishments in the state of Bavaria. Well-qualified workforce for ICT

The State of Bavaria has an outstanding source of top-level workers with excellent technology qualifications and offers an attractive location for people working in industry and science. Innovative results in Basic Research and in Applied Research enhance international presence and attractiveness of the cluster for science and industry.

In higher educational training Bavarian Universities guarantee an excellent standard with 17 courses of studies in informatics, 16 in business informatics, 13 for electrical and information technology, three for bio-informatics as well as two courses of study in computational engineering.

Optimum environment

With its first-class infrastructure Bavaria provides an optimum environment for the ICT sector. Broadband connections open up new applications and fields of use to companies, creating higher efficiency, greater flexibility and enhanced competitiveness. From optical fiber connection to DSL (digital subscriber line) and satellite up to wireless radio technologies such as WLAN and WiMAX – Bavaria tops the league for introducing forward-looking technologies. There are, for instance, four wireless radio networks of the third generation using the UMTS standard, which enable the use of broadband and multimedia applications, also in wireless telephony.

Trade fairs and congresses
Munich and Nuremberg are the scene of important fairs and events throughout the year, such as the Systems, Electronica/Productronica or also the Communication World in Munich and SPS/IPC/DRIVES in Nuremberg.

Bavarian initiatives and funding schemes in the field of information and communications technology

Promotion of new technological developments and their application is spelt with capital letters in Bavaria. The LfA Förderbank Bayern (Bank for the Advancement of the Bavarian Economy) and the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology support innovative, primarily small and medium-sized businesses by offering them financial aid tailored to their particular needs.

IT competence is bundled in Bavaria to attractive regional nodes. These knowledge strongholds are characterized by a high density of ICT businesses which benefit from the excellent standard of training and the support given to innovative start-ups in Bavaria.

The Greater Munich Area
There is no location in Germany with as many jobs in the ICT sector as in the Greater Munich Area. Innovative drive in the sectors of digital technologies, wireless communications and software make the Bavarian capital the Number One IT location in Europe. Many global players such as Infineon, T-Systems, Softlab, Microsoft, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, Oracle, Siemens and Sun Microsystems, and also the universities (Technical University, Ludwig-Maximilian-University, Munich University of Applied Sciences and the University of the Bundeswehr) which train qualified young talent, contribute to this ranking. Additionally, the Garching Gate Technology Center and Incubator offers young high-tech businesses ideal conditions for getting started.
Available platforms in the sector are the Munich Network for IT and Media (Förderkreis IT- und Medien-Wirtschaft München e.V. (FIWM), the Munich Network and the Initiative of Munich IT Companies (MünchnerUnternehmerKreisIT).

Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg


With 90,000 people working in the IT sector Metropolitan Nuremberg is one of the top addresses in Bavaria. Home to leading enterprises such as Lucent Technologies, Novell and Siemens this is a location where many other specialists have also set up sites. Institutions like the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits , for example, and universities (Friedrich-Alexander-University) as well as universities of applied sciences in Nuremberg and Ansbach) are centers for high-caliber research and training.
The IGZ Innovation Center and Incubator in Erlangen affords budding entrepreneurs a fertile environment. They are mentored by active networks for innovative companies such as the Northern Bavarian Nework.
The Nuremberg NIK Initiative is the platform for the regional IT industry.

Regensburg/Upper Palatinate
The Regensburg economic region is a fast growing location for IT businesses: over recent years some 30 percent of company start-ups were in the ICT sector. Siemens, Siemens VDO, Infineon, Osram Opto Semiconductors and Toshiba all have a presence in this area.
The region has a strong following of young talent: every year over 1,200 graduates from IT-related studies are turned out by the University of Regensburg, the Universities of Applied Sciences in Regensburg and Amberg-Weiden or they have completed training at the ICT Academy and the IT Schools in Wiesau.
The Regensburg IT Incubator Center IT Speicher is a center for promoting young IT start-ups and new business settlements at very high standards. The IT sector is supported in the Upper Palatinate by the platform www.regensburg.it.

Augsburg/Swabia
Swabia opens up a host of opportunities to the IT sector. The number of people employed in ICT companies, such as for example Deutsche Telekom, Fujitsu Siemens, NCR and Siemens, has increased continuously over recent years.
This reflects the excellence of Swabian higher education at the University of Augsburg, University of Applied Sciences of Augsburg, University of Applied Sciences in Kempten and Neu-Ulm, as well as the career centers like the Summer Academy and the it academy bavaria. IT initiatives like the Kommunikations- und Informationstechnologie Initiative Schwaben e.V. (KIT´S), pro-actively support the IT future of Swabia.

Rosenheim
Rosenheim has established itself as the location for creatives in the IT industry. The University of Applied Sciences as well as the ICT Academy are the focal points of the IT center. Besides global leaders like the Kathrein Group, many small and medium-sized businesses have set up a base in the region. ROSIK is an active cooperation platform for companies from the ICT sector.

Lower Bavaria
In the IT sector Lower Bavaria offers an outstanding user environment, in the automotive sector (BMW works in Dingolfing) and the logistics sector, among others. Renowned universities (University in Passau, Universities of Applied Sciences in Landshut and Deggendorf as well as networks (e.g. the IT Forum of Lower Bavaria and the Lightweight Construction Cluster) enable companies to make optimum use of a broad knowledge base by interconnecting research, teaching and practice.

Upper Franconia
Boasting the third highest industry density in Europe, Upper Franconia offers a most attractive and well-balanced user environment and is thus an interesting market for IT service providers. The Universities in Bamberg, Bayreuth, Coburg and Hof train skilled and competent young IT talent. Cutting-edge learning facilities like the Virtual University of Bavaria award the region important expertise.

Lower Franconia
Innovative IT companies with applications in the fields of health/medicine, new materials, automotive engineering and logistics, among others, as well as the University of WĂĽrzburg and the universities of applied sciences in WĂĽrzburg-Schweinfurt and Aschaffenburg offer best competences and potential in ICT.

The project IT-Cluster Lower Franconia pools existing skills and intensifies cooperation in the ICT sector.
